Samsung announces Honeycomb Galaxy Tab 10.1 at MWC 2011

by gseth on 14th February, 2011 in Samsung, Android

The Galaxy Tab 10.1 (aka Tab 2) is the successor to the original Galaxy Tab released by Samsung last year. The new tab has a whooping 10.1 inch 480x800 TFT display and runs on Android 3.0 honeycomb which is basically designed for tabs. Besides this, the Tab is powered by the nVidia Tegra 2 Dual Core processor and the low power ddr2 memory along with 6860 mAH of battery makes it an efficient product. You will definately need not worry about the battery running out every now and then. It also does Full HD 1080p video recording and playback and is going to be available in 16gb / 32gb storage versions. It also has a 2MP camera at the front. Besides 3G video calling, you will be able to do high quality video chat on Google Talk and probably Skype (when they release video calling feature on their app for Android).

Samsung managed to fit all the above in 10.9mm thickness and 599g. That makes the Galaxy Tab 10.1 approximately 150g less than the iPad and the Motorola Xoom. The other advantage Samsung has over Motorola and iPad is reach. The Galaxy Tab managed to sell over 2 million units because it hit the Asia Pacific region at the same time it hit Europe and America, Infact I got my Tab (India) some 4-6 days before it hit the US market. No specific announcement date was given, only early spring was mentioned. Vodafone will be the first operator to get it.

Patrick Chomet, Vodafone's Group Director of Terminals, said: "Vodafone customers in over 20 markets around the world will be the first to get the GALAXY Tab 10.1 when it goes on sale this spring. Samsung have produced a stylish, market-leading implementation of the new Android 3.0 platform which will be the first Honeycomb device to arrive in many of those markets. Vodafone's competitive data tariffs and reliable, high-speed networks make using the GALAXY Tab 10.1 a great experience."

Another good news is that there is no TouchWiz UI by Samsung on the Tab 10.1, it comes with stock Android 3.0, which in my experience is a very good thing. Less customizations (nil in this case) results in earlier software update releases and lesser bugs.
